Saint John before God and the Elders
In this woodcut, Albrecht Dürer creates a grand, multi-tiered composition.
At the top, God the Father sits enthroned, surrounded by seven lamps of fire and the four symbols of the Evangelists: the lion, the ox, the man, and the eagle.
Around him are twenty-four Elders, crowned and holding harps, evoking prophets and apostles. In the centre is the mystical Lamb, with seven eyes and seven horns, its feet resting on the book with seven seals. Below, a vast landscape unfolds, dominated by a castle overlooking a lake.
The image brings together heaven and earth, the visible and the invisible: a total vision that conveys the full power and mystery of divine revelation.
