St George and the Dragon
1330/1335
All the unique qualities of Vitale’s impetuous and fantastic painting are revealed in the St George.
“Is there any violence more lightning-quick, more wildly attached to the culmination of a surge of life, than that of the St George?...
It seems to me that the height of Vitale’s art is his eagerness with which he captures the climax of violent and sudden actions. For instance, in the “gesture of a knight who spears the dragon and is almost thrown from his horse by the momentum, while his horse simultaneously rears up and retreats”.
