Latona Turns Shepherds into Frogs

1710/1715

The painting “belongs to the master’s most prolific years; and it is worth noting how he transmuted the mythological theme into a bizarre scene of natural, rustic life, with a material power, a searing chiaroscuro, an expressionist intensity in the frogs. In the figure of Latona, there is such a moulded solidity that it foreshadows Piazzetta; but in the upper left-hand corner, the exquisiteness of form and tone in the sleeping figure recall Watteau’s sleeping riflemen”.
